What is a Hora?

In Vedic astrology, a Hora is a planetary hour. Each day from local sunrise to the next sunrise is divided into 24 Horas — 12 in the daylight half and 12 in the night half. Each Hora is ruled by one of the seven classical grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn, repeating in the traditional order.

The first Hora after sunrise is ruled by the lord of the weekday (for example, Venus on Friday). The sequence then continues through the seven planets. Hora length varies with season and latitude because day and night are unequal outside the equinoxes.

Use this guide to align activities with the active planetary tone. The lists below are general Vedic recommendations for each Hora ruler — combine them with your live Hora Watch clock, panchang, and harmony score for timing decisions. New to Horas?
